Carausius (British Seccessionist Emperor)
286 - 293 A.D.

Carausius was a Roman military commander who, fearing that that he was about to be relieved of his command in Britain and executed for being in league with the pirates he was supposed to be fighting, declared himself Emperor of Britain and took control of the province and parts of Northern Gaul in 286. He seized control of 3-4 Roman Legions and many auxiliary troops stationed in Britain and Northern Gaul at the time, perhaps with the aid of the vast quantity of treasure he was alleged to have acquired from the pirates. Carausius managed to thwart Roman attempts to re-conquer Britain for the rest of his life. However, his downfall came not from the Roman legions, but from his own treasurer Allectus, who had Carausius murdered and then had himself installed in his place. Allectus was defeated and killed in turn by forces under the command of Constantius Chlorus, who restored Britain to the Empire in 296.

Coins of Carausius are quite scarce, and very popular amongst collectors of British coins. This particular coin is thought to have been minted at Colchester 'C', although other Roman towns and cities such as the no longer extant Clausentum, (which stood near modern day Southampton) are also candidates for the site of this unknown British mint.
